Sun, Moon & Rising — What's the Difference?

Your Sun is your core, your Moon is your emotional world, and your Rising is how the world first meets you. Here's the simple version.

You probably know your Sun sign — the one you read in every horoscope. But a birth chart has three pillars that together say far more: the Sun, the Moon, and the Rising sign.

The Sun: your core

The Sun is your essential identity — who you are when you're most yourself. It represents your will, vitality, and what drives you forward through life.

The Moon: your emotional world

The Moon describes how you feel and what you need to feel safe. It's your inner landscape — instincts, habits, and what comforts you when the day is done.

The Rising: your first impression

The Rising sign (or Ascendant) was the sign climbing over the horizon at the moment you were born. It shapes how people experience you before they really know you — your style, demeanor, and approach to the world.

Because the Rising changes roughly every two hours, you need a birth time to calculate it. That's exactly why an accurate time makes your chart far more personal.
